Liver Fibrosis Scanning (Fibroscan®)

Service Description

The Faculty of Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong used Fibroscan to examine diabetic patients for fatty liver and liver fibrosis between 2013 and 2014. It was found that approximately 47% of patients with fatty liver or 33% of patients with severe liver fibrosis had normal liver enzyme levels, indicating that blood tests for liver function cannot fully reflect the condition of fatty liver and liver fibrosis. Among individuals with a BMI above 30, 95% have fatty liver, and 35% have severe liver fibrosis. Many people with fatty liver show no symptoms, making it difficult for them to detect the condition. Fatty liver, a history of diabetes, and high triglyceride levels are all risk factors for liver cancer. Liver Fibrosis Scanning (Fibroscan®) can measure liver stiffness and fat content, providing a more accurate assessment of fatty liver and liver fibrosis. - Takes only 15 minutes - Painless, non-invasive, and radiation-free - Effectively measures liver stiffness and assesses the degree of fatty liver - Only applicable to individuals aged 18 or above Suitable for regular examination of high-risk individuals for fatty liver and fibrosis, including: - Those with diabetes/insulin resistance - Obesity - Hypertension - Abnormal cholesterol levels - Long-term alcohol consumption - Hepatitis B carriers - Hepatitis C carriers - Long-term use of certain medications that may cause fatty liver, such as corticosteroids, rheumatoid arthritis drugs (Methotrexate), and breast cancer drugs (Tamoxifen) Important Notes: 1. Fasting for 3 hours is required before the examination. 2. The following individuals are not suitable for FibroScan® examination: - Pregnant women - Individuals with implanted pacemakers/defibrillators - Those with ascites - Severely obese individuals - Individuals with too narrow intercostal spaces Individuals with a BMI over 30 require special appointment arrangements.
